Ok, Ok, you might be thinking duh - no comparision. Well I raced an old 911 turbo, first generation, probably around a 1977 could have been newer. Turbo background - the first gen (1975-1978) produced 260 HP from a 3 liter. 78 received 3.3 L = 300hp (pretty good!).
Anyways I'm fairly certain the turbo I raced today had the 260 hp engine, as it was neck and neck.
(My 01 330ci is stock - have sport & prem. packs - 225 hp with 17in pilot sports & a 5spd manual).
So we started as the 2 front cars at a red light that was 2 blocks from a freeway on ramp, which was an up hill 300 degree circle on ramp (the best kind). I was in the right lane, he in the left and I had a feeling he was going to try to take me, cut in front and hop on the freeway. (I just bought my 330 and have never raced from stop until today).
Green light: We both new and took off - it was literally neck & neck and then I wan't sure if he was trying to enter the freeway or continue straight on the road, but we will both trying as we hit 65. Then I let up just a bit since I was about to enter the on-ramp, just then he got the lead and pulled a balsy swerve in front of me. (ouch). well as we ronded the 300 degree up hill ramp I was on his ass like no tomorrow and he new it. As we pushed the limits of both our cars, we continued to accelerate, his back end nearly got loose (I failed to take my DSC off, so I didn't get loose, but might have been held back for a moment, not that it mattered b/c I could not pass him yet).
As we merged with traffic, things got intense. It was commute time, traffic was heavy but travelling at 70 with open pockets here and there. I was mad at myself for not entering the on-ramp turn with more aggression, but I don't know my cars limits perfectly yet (lesson learned). Anyway, I followed him closely moving through traffic, then out manuevered and smarted him by finding better pockets and taking the lead by quite a bit, he finally caught up, but that part was too late, we passed each several times until I yet again out smarted him throught the traffic.
I slowed up and hung with traffic - letting him pull next to me. I gave a honk, powered the window down and gave him a thumbs up, he acknoledged with mutual aggrement that we did our part and had fun doing it, all in a mornings drive to work...
? Lets here some thoughts??
