The way I understand it is, if there are updates at all, they are either sent to you by mail for free yearly, or you purchase the new DVD ROM for this year at your dealership.

I don't know about the DVD, but I got two updates for my 2002 Nav CDs without paying for them.

I have been reported errors and omissions to NavTech, maybe that is how they reward the effort (either that or Irvine BMW ordered them for me.....)

I don't think BMW provides DVD map updates for free. If you want an updated map, you have to get it from the BMW dealership, NAV-TECH does not sell map updates for BMW on their site.

Also I experimented with copying my DVD, and it works, but unreliably. I did an "exact copy" data disk with Record Now DX on a DVD+R.

My idea was if it worked, to go in with some other owners on an update, then burn copies for all.

With the burned disk in there, this is what happened:
Sometimes, about 1 in 20 times, the nav computer does not start up. The splash screen never appears (------BMW-------). If I shut the car off and let the system reset (~3-5 mins) it comes up fine.

Other than that it works perfectly. I have since put the original back in and it hasn't had the failure again, nor did it ever fail before I put the copy in.

So.......I am thinking of burning another as I have a newer version of Record Now DX and see what happens.....

bmwrocks: use a DVD-R written at 2x speed. I read that you're supposed to use DVD-R media and burn at the lowest speed for less errors. I used memorex DVD-R's burned at 2x and have never had a problem with my nav. Hope this helps.

Well yes, duh. I have the disc and was just experimenting with playing a backup in my system. Again, motivation was to go in with other owners on a disc BUY then burn copies and distribute to buffer the cost, which is like $125.

On the DVD-R front, I don't have a multimode burner but my brother-in-law does. Maybe I will try it with his. Of course I would have to buy a DVD-R disc which neither I nor he has, as we both burn DVD+R for movie copies and digital home video.

What is odd about all this is a DVD+R copy works to some degree. Wouldn't you expect DVD+R to not work at all if it was expecting DVD-R format? I am no expert on the diffs between +R and -R......

I may try to burn at +R @ 2x and see what that does. I burned the one at 4x....

I got mine '04 330Cic (October '03) with DVD version 2002-1. I called NavTech and inquired about current rev. It was 2003-02, and I was told that dealer should give me a current one at delivery time. After couple tough conversations with my SA i finally get 2003-02 from them.
