try ordrering from crutchfield.com or cardomain.com. they should be able to tell what size you need based on your model and year (i know crutchfield for sure). then you can go from there.

know of something that will work that will be WAY cheaper??
Wow, $371.58 for just the two door units?!

Well, at least these guys will sell you an entire speaker upgrade
package, specifically designed for the E46 BMW, for $369:

http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/products.php/CA=174?gclid=CIba6Ia3uoMCFQ4MSQodUxy2gw

Having read a bit about their stuff, I may pick up a set, and my
factory speakers aren't even blown.

Some of their marketing pitch:

  • One of the first things most BMW owners notice about their vehicles is how poorly the audio system is designed. There is no clear definition at any volume level. The tweeters are almost nonexistent, and there is little to no bass response. To address these problems simply and affordably, the Bavarian Soundwerks developed the Stage 1 Audio Package for the 3 Series / M3.

  • Completely factory appearance - BMW didn't get the stereo right, but we think they did a great job on your 3 Series / M3's interior, so we've designed the Stage 1 to install without a trace. Your interior will appear unchanged, and only you and your passengers will know you've upgraded your audio system.

  • Will this work with my Standard, Harmon-Kardon, DSP, or Premium Sound equipped BMW? Will it make a big difference?

Yes, absolutely! In your BMW's audio system, the factory speakers are the weakest link. Even in most "premium" sound systems, the speakers are nothing more than compressed paper and plastic tweeters. Because our Stage I Audio Upgrade replaces that weak link, the speakers, you'll see a VERY nice improvement in sound quality in your BMW, regardless of whether you have the most basic BMW audio system or the nicest.

  • Do I need to replace my factory amplifier or head unit?

No, you don't. Because we've carefully selected the speakers used in our Stage I Audio Upgrade, they're efficient enough to run off of your stock amplifier and head unit.

  • Which speakers are replaced in my BMW?

Your 3 Series / M3 Coupe has a 10 speaker system consisting of a 3 way set in the front of the vehicle (tweeter, 2" midrange, and 6.25" midbass driver) and a 2 way set in the rear of the vehicle (tweeter and 6.25" midbass driver). If your vehicle has the upgraded Harman Kardon stereo, you'll also find two 6x9" subwoofers in your rear deck. Our Stage 1 Audio Upgrade replaces 8 of the 10 interior component speakers - everything except the front midrange drivers since the cost/benefit ratio means they just aren't really worth replacing. The factory subwoofers, if present, will also stay. This setup allows for the simplest installation and biggest improvement in sound quality for the least amount of money.

the door speakers you speak of are the tweeters and a 2" midrange speaker....No way they should cost $185....Remember BMW prices are inflated...a good set of speakers in that size can be found elsewhere much, much cheaper......crutchfield or even your local audio store should be able to help....

You might want to try ebay and maybe some other bimmer forums audio "for sale" sections. Quite a few people dump the OE setup and go aftermarket. You could get a used set cheap.

If you buy crap they sound like crap...if you buy the best then they sound like the best...you get what you pay for......I know there has to be some sound shops in the Hampton Rds. area......I used to live in Norfolk and VA. Beach(that was before i could have my own car though...LOL)...but i know you can find something.....network man, network! LOL....no seriously some MB Quartz or Some A/D/S speakers should do your HK system fine.....
