I just noticed today after parking with the wheels turned halfway left that there was something unusual about the tires. On my OEM Goodyear Eagle RS-A's tires upfront (I didn't inspect the rear) there is a red and green line that runs through the thread in the middle... wear lines??? There is still thread on top of it but in some parts it can be seen through the middle of the thread and between them there is a continuing line of red and green. I noticed this on both tires.... isn't 850 miles and 4 weeks a little quick for brand new tires to wear? Should I call the dealer or Goodyear, or is it like that?[confused]

[ohcrap] Let me be polite, Oh !@#$% yes, tires should last you at least 45,000 to 60,000 miles if kept properly inflated, balanced, aligned and rotated. 850 miles is frankly unfreakin believeable. The dealer owes you brand new tires and a balance of all new tires. If your tires are wearing out at 850 miles then there is something not quite right about how your vehicle is aligned. I'm thinking there's more to this story. Can you tell us tire size, wear pattern? Like is it worn level across all treads evenly? Maybe your just seeing the wear indicators, placement in the tread depth. Do any of the other tires show this wear indicator? What's this tire inflated to, (psi for this tire) does it match the other front tire? Lots of questions come to mind. Need some more details if you would please. As far as Zchild statement of: 45 to 60k. I would have to disagree, tire wear is not univeresal. Each specific tire has a wear rating, then you factor in your driving habits, and conditions during use.
I drive Michelin PS2 which probably won't last 25k, but that's OK, I underestood that before I purchased them. I love the grip and ride they give me, NO complaints. I do agree that 850 miles is extremely premature and warrants further investigating. Did the tire come with any warranty (road warranty maybe)? Let's hear more please.

My car has the German Goodyears from the factory. They had that line also. It wears off after a while. It seems as though it is a NEW tire indicator. Nothing to be concerned about.

LOL, go to the dealer and tell him that those thin little rubber mini-nipples that cover the brand new tires like hair wore off after only a few hundred miles. Demand new tires.

Wear indicators placed in the thread depth sounds like it. It does seem like it's a red and green strip of rubber in the middle of the thread but sometimes it goes deeper and sometimes its more towards the top. Also a few of the tires "teeth" looked unevenly worn in the middle and that thing showed more on those. I think it's goodyears crappy way of placing a new tire indicator on their tires that got me alarmed. I did call two tire shops and the guy tells me it's a "size indicator" takes 3 months to wear off (but the way its unevenly running through the thread made it hard to believe) another said "it's a thread wear indicator but since it's still covered I don't need to replace it yet."

I think maybe the tires might be overinflated, my error for not checking, and just trusting the dealer... That explains the slight middle thread wear. Whether they're indicators or "markers" remains a good question, but since Kirby has them too it's probably normal. Just an awkward way of goodyear placing red-green lines in different thread depths confusing me I guess..... Thanks for the replys, I am new to Goodyear tires.

The red-green lines are between the tire "teeth" and also mid thread depth, sometimes deeper sometimes more towards the top, but they are definately covered by thread. Are you absolutely sure it's a tire indicator and not thread wear lines.

If they were wear lines and say they were clearly visible in a few months with the thread worn down at 3-4k would I have any say or would they (dealer, goodyear)just say I "hard braked the thread off"? Hope Goodyear has a warranty...

12k '04 330Ci with Dunlop 8080E - Trashed!

I have an '04 330Ci with the Sport Package (No rotations here folke) and started to hear tire growl from the front tires, naturally I went to the dealer to get them checked out (thought it was either balance or alignment). As soon as the dealer got the car up on the ramps they spotted that the tires were cracked in the tread and the sidewalls were dried out.

They took the car to a local Dunlop tire dealer for a second opinion, same story, the dealer and the tire guys were shocked how the tires had cracked with only 12k on them!

Suffice to say that I had to BUY a whole new set of 8080E's, the tire dealer has sent the old ones back to Dunlop for testing - apparently I (according to the tire dealer) should get a cheque in the mail from Dunlop for the balance of the tred life left on my old tires.

Keep you fingers crossed for me.

When my car was new it had Dunlops and they had catostrophic tire failure at 4,000 miles............the dealer replaced the tires at no charge.........they refer to Dunlop tires as "Dunflops"..................
