New Question about Ball Joints

My '88 325 needs the ball joints replaced. The mechanic at Midas, when he replaced my muffler, told me that my ball joints were in really bad shape.
I have noticed since then that there is more shaking in the front and the steering feels a little wobbly (or perhaps it's just my imagination, although I fear not). I don't have the money to buy new ball joints, control arms, etc.
My question is this: How serious is this? Will there be serious consequences if I keep driving my car for a few more weeks before replacing the control arms?

just think about what all that vibrating is doing to the rest of the front suspension and tires. Bad stuff.

I would make it top priority, like wheel bearings. Although I will admit your wheels will most likely not fall off.
