Follow up to the replacement seat cover I ordered from BMW. I installed it last weekend. It turned out great. I found directions for dismantling the seats here: http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/318isseat.html The directions at that site are excellent - very straightforward and made taking the seat apart easy. I was amazed at the conditions of the seats internally and the seat foam - it all looked brand new! I built up the seat foam a little bit by hot gluing some compressed polyfoam I got at a local fabric store onto the seat foam. Installing the new cover simply involved hog ringing the premarked areas on the cover to the metal rods in the notches in the seat foam and then patiently strecthing the vinyl over to the hooks on the seat frame.

Took me 1.5-2 hours starting with the seat in the car and then ending with the seat back in the car. Easy job.

In the pics, you can see how much plusher the driver's seat bottom is than the passenger seat now. In the pics, the color of the new vinyl looks lighter than the seat back and the passenger seat, but it is just the lighting. The new vinyl actually matches perfectly! Not bad for $70, and one of the 6 remaining seat covers left in the world!! Comfier now, with more thigh support.

Wow, looks brand new. Seems like a very worthwhile $70, even has piping! Did the $70 get you both seats, or only the driver?

They had 6 of the sand leatherette non-sport seat covers left when I ordered mine - they were located in the Dingolfing, Germany central parts warehouse. That was the total world-wide stock. BMW shipped it to the dealer via Priority FedEx for free. The guy that ordered it for me had ordered new cloth cushions for a buddy of his - he showed them to me. He said that they had more stock on those, but they were a blue color. You just need to have a friendly guy or gal at your local BMW dealer parts counter take a couple of minutes of their time to look it up in the system and see if they can still get your fabric color. All they need is your VIN to look up the appropriate seat style and color for your car (it amazes me that all the information about each individual car they have built is still in their system after all these years).

It's an easy job to do, though. You'll need hog ring pliers and hog rings to install the new seat cover. You'll also need a pair of snap ring pliers to take the seats apart. All in all, much, MUCH easier than when I redid the seats in my Camaro.

Let me know what you find out.
