Follow up to the replacement seat cover I ordered from BMW. I installed it last weekend. It turned out great. I found directions for dismantling the seats here: http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/318isseat.html The directions at that site are excellent - very straightforward and made taking the seat apart easy. I was amazed at the conditions of the seats internally and the seat foam - it all looked brand new! I built up the seat foam a little bit by hot gluing some compressed polyfoam I got at a local fabric store onto the seat foam. Installing the new cover simply involved hog ringing the premarked areas on the cover to the metal rods in the notches in the seat foam and then patiently strecthing the vinyl over to the hooks on the seat frame.
Took me 1.5-2 hours starting with the seat in the car and then ending with the seat back in the car. Easy job.
In the pics, you can see how much plusher the driver's seat bottom is than the passenger seat now. In the pics, the color of the new vinyl looks lighter than the seat back and the passenger seat, but it is just the lighting. The new vinyl actually matches perfectly! Not bad for $70, and one of the 6 remaining seat covers left in the world!! Comfier now, with more thigh support.
