My sliptronic was replaced two days ago and I swear it feels like a totally different car. It is definitely faster and more responsive. I can now actually feel the difference in the sport drive mode, whereas before I could not. The rpms hold up longer. The original transmission I had was definitely defective in more ways than one. The cold start/reverse problem was only the tip of the iceberg IMHO. It feels like a brand new car now. Much, much quicker. Go figure...

I have been following all of the "Sliptronic" threads since the beginning. I have an 04 330 CIC with the Steptronic that I ordered and was built 4-4-03 and now have 1400 miles.. The transmission origin label stated Germany so I figured we had a ZF.. I got under the car tonight with great difficulty while on small ramps and we have a GM label on the tranny tag. I almost got sick. Thus far our trans has performed flawlessly. There has been no lag in engagement from reverse to forward ("knock on wood") and when in the sport mode definitely shifts different (in a good way). It also shifts ok in the standard mode. I don't know whether to feel happy or sad. At least there is 3 years of warranty left. I asked my parts contact at my dealer if he could tell from my VIN what tranny I had before I checked for myself and he stated he could not tell from that. I asked him if they had replaced any (they had) and if they had replaced any twice (they had).. The service advisor played dumb. We also received the recall on the temp control update but have not had done yet (our battery has never went dead, as you can see by the mileage it sits alot).. If I didn't post under the correct tranny thread, I apoligize, just sharing my BMW experience thus far.

Interesting. The way they confirmed my tranny was one of the problem trannies was by using my VIN number.

Boatman,

It seems most of the cars with issues were late model 2003 or early model 2004's... Although some people with earlier model 2003's have reported the problem also.

Sounds like you may be ok... I think most people noticed the problem rather quickly after receiving the car...but not all.... so just keep the info handy just in case.....

My transmission is being replaced as we speak. I'm curious to see if I notice a difference in performance when I get it back tonight. I too felt that the "reverse to drive" in the morning was not the only issue with the transmission. I'll post a response after I get it back and give my opinion on the new one.

Also, when I called the service department, I had to leave a message regarding the problem. When they called back, they said to bring it in, we're giving you a new transmission. No questions asked. Though I'm irked that my 2 month old car needs a new transmission, I'm happy that the dealership is taking care of it in a timely manner. I feel sorry for all those who've had trouble getting the problem corrected. Hopefully the new tranny will fix the issue.
