Hi all!...just found this board and i think it's great!!!...lots of info here and have been reading alot of posts...my wife just bought a new 2004 325ci coupe w/the steptronic trans a month ago and i have a question that i hope some of you bimmer owners could help me with.

when the car reaches about 40 mph there appears to be a humming sound eminating from the rear of the car...as the speed increases so does the pitch of the hum. it's not extremely loud, just noticable enough to be annoying...it has the stk 16 in wheels with pirelli tires on it.
adjusting the tire air pressure had no impact on the hum.

is this a normal noise that the tires make? or do you think something else could be causing this?

thanks in advance for you input!

if it were the tires i would think the humming would come from both the front and the back ...

sounds like your rear-differential is making some noise ...

i would take it in to the dealer and have them test drive it to make sure

hope this helps ...

and welcome to the board

Welcome aboard Ken and congrats on your new purchase. Humming noise could be like Ben says, rear differential or perhaps the tires. Best thing to do is contact your dealer so that they can note this problem on file.

The majority of the noises your hear will probably go away after your car breaks in. Important note is to break it in properly, this means don't exceed 100 mph or 5k rpm for the first 1000 miles or so.

My tires are not the quietest either, maybe it is just the tires making the sound. Many tires out there can make humming sounds at various speeds, but have it checked out if you cannot tell definitively where the sound is coming from.

Good luck and congrats on your new Bimmer!!!

Hi all and thank you for the kind welcome!!!
Your input is much appreciated....I 'll be taking the car to dealer as soon asap....I called them about the noise and they will gladly check it out. The dealer we bought it from is Daniels BMW in Allentown Pa. I hope their service is good. I haven't heard anything negative about them.

thanks again!
