I have an 86 325 5spd w/191k. Just barely failed for NOx reading 1362. The limit in NJ is 1323. The numbers mean nothing to me but the man said when NOx fails it is usually double the limit. He suggested to start with ERG system BUT he never saw a fail this close!!! Just my f'ing luck. I just replaced the front end so I have to make this work. Any tips please $$$ are tight I can not afford to let anyone loose on this car I must do it. And I have 45 days to fix it!! Bastards!!!
Thanks for any help

reminds me of a time when a bastard failed my inspection on my 325e because of the egr valve..... and also wanted to change the front control arm..... saying that it was broke..... Paul, do a tune up, check all the vaccum hoses and fuel hoses, might have a small leak...
JRT, I have a 1985 325e Delphin gray coupe with 258000 and it does run like new too....I love the car....

Take it to a good repair station if you have those in NJ. I just had my car smogged and it also failed. The guy methodically troubleshot the system to the problem, the catalytic converter. The final test, pulling a plug wire and watching the unburned exhaust gases climb (a good cat should keep them low) confirmed the problem. He welded a new cat in and charged $325 for everything. The guy knew what he was doing.

Good luck.

thanks for the replies guy's. I only had time to look to NOT see any ERG sys.
I did not replace the coil, which is suspect anyway, maybe a weak spark letting too much unspent fuel thru?? keep in mind I missied by very little. When I did the timing belt I did the O2 sensor, cap, rotor and plugs and that was only 10k ago. I didn't do the coil at that time because I thought it was a big money item. I have to check the resistance again, I think it was a little out of spec. What do you guys think about the WEAK spark theory??
