I need some BMW feedback...

I was on my way to the gym this morning when I threw my bag into the trunk and accidentally grabbed the wrong keys [bash]. Unfortunately, I neglected to make a copy of my keys.

My car is a 2004 330Ci. I have the added security system installed. Roadside assistance informed me they cannot do anything until Tuesday. They can tow my car to the closest dealership and have an extra copy made but it will take several days.

My questions:

Anyone come across not having an extra set of keys when locked out of your car? How did you get a copy made?

Doesn't the dealership just need the VIN and proof of ownership to make a copy made? Do they really have to tow my car?

To top it off, my cell phone and wallet are in the trunk with the keys...at least it remains in my garage...

Any suggestions...

Your key has a computer chip in it and cannot be made at the dealer. They need a copy of your registration and driver's license to order a key. I am not sure how long it takes, but it can be a few days. I do not know why they'd need to tow it, but maybe that is correct. I know they had to tow my daughter's VW to the dealer once to order a key and program it for the car.

Wow...sorry to hear about that bro. Damn that sucks.

Didn't you get a second key when you got your car? Mine also came with the plastic master. I think it's standard for them to need to tow the car to the dealer. I guess to hook up the computer?

I'm surprised BMW Assist can't unlock it remotely like Onstar.

It shouldn't need to be towed. If you had lost your keys, then it would have to have the ignition key programmed, but if you just locked your keys in it, you just need another key to unlock it (no programming needed).

AZRobert makes a good point. A locksmith should be able to get you into the trunk with a set of lock picks as the coded key is not necessary for the trunk tumbler. than recover your keys and your good to go...oh yes order an extra than.

Unfortunately, a locksmith cannot get into a BMW when a car is locked remotely. The trunk on the 04 330Ci does not have a key entrance. If the locksmith were to enter the vehicle through the driver's or passengers door or if the glass was broken to enter the vehicle, the alarm would shut down the vehicle. The doors, trunk and engine would be not be operational...

I would think they wouldn't have to tow the vehicle but don't they have to program it to the car's alarm system? Not sure...anyone?

Something like this just happened to me this past weekend, ended up locking my keys in the trunk of my 2001 33ci. Nobody would even think about trying to open it for me. Roadside assistance wanted to tow and order me a new key. Ended up driving home to get my spare master (8hr) because I had to work anyways. However I have been driving this car for 4 years now and had no idea that THERE IS NO WAY TO GET INTO YOUR CAR unless you have the key end of story. Morel here is carry the freaking spare or get ready to wait 2-3 days to have one shipped in. I just wish I would have been told how difficult it would be to get in and realized how important that spare key is, consider yourself warned.

This is not true. I just went out to test this and if you put the key into the key entrance (it does exist, sorry!!!) and turn it left, the trunk pops open MECHANICALLY. If this lock could be picked, then you could retrieve your keys from inside a locked trunk or the car by folding down the rear seats and climbing in......

Don't know if the lock can be picked and turned left since I am not a locksmith though.....

Where's the valet key that came with the car??

Haha.....I know you don't mean me, but mine is STUPIDLY locked in the glovebox (hidden deep inside my owners manual package), of course. If I kept it anywhere else I would lose it for sure. I know.....the car could be stolen simply by breaking the window opening the glovebox and driving away....

Also my wheel lock key tool is in my trunk in the tool kit.....hehehehe.....STUPID!!! Same reason, I would lose it anywhere else. [bash]

I'm not going to go into details, but you can get into the car easily. [paranoid]

It's posted all over the place and is the reason for the keyhole delete mod. That is all I will say. [doorpeek]

You know, BMW gives you stickers that say, "No key in glovebox" cuz thiefs know tons of people leave their spare in the owners manual package. That means easy pickings for a car you'd otherwise need to tow away.

Do non-convertibles' glove boxes automatically lock when you use the key fob to lock the car regardless if you stick the key into the glovebox lock or not? Just wondering if it's a safeguard for people who leave the top down yet forget to manually turn the glove box lock with the key.
