i have been on e46fanatics site for some time now. this annoying intake noise plagues many e46's. i had it, and i searched and searched for an answer. there were a ton of people with the same prob i had but no one could come up with an answer. so i set out to find the prob myself and succeded finally. if you want to check your disa valve, it is on the drivers side of the engine, attached to the intake manifold. it has a vacuum actuator you can see move. just start the engine and either reach down and manually operate the throttle or have someone hit the gas pedal inside the car. when they hit the gas pedal you should be able to see the actuator move back and forth depnding on the vacuum in the engine. if it is moving back and forth about a 1/2 inch or so, then you dont need a disa. if it just jiggles a little or not at all, then there is a hole in the vacuum diaphram and need replaced. the disa is supposed to alter the characteristics of the intake manifold runners depending on rpm and load. most people could block theirs off and prolly notice ver little difference. i could notice very little diff.there is also a core charge onthe unit if i remember right. the intake boot isnt hard to replace if you have even a basic set of tools. i did mine in about thirty five minutes. and it was the first one i replaced, ever. so dont let them gouge you on the labor time. i have heard quotes as high as 200 bux to replace this boot from other people on e46fanatics. good luck!
