Octane Levels in BMW's

Recently here in Arizona, a report came out stating that lower octane levels don't affect the vehicle. Because of our rising gas prices people are using 89. A local was interviewed and he stated he alternates between 91 & 89. He also drives a Mercedes. I know BMW wants you to use high octane but what effect does the car have using a lower octane. Since 1981 vehicles have a sensor which detects the octane level and the engine adjusts for it. Petrolium Companies say it doesn't matter what level of octane you use. I here people stating that the engine will begin knocking at lower levels. Anyway what your opinions about octane levels and should a BMW use lower than what the manufacture states?

if the knock sensor does not work, then yea, it'll knock. But the problem is, to prevent knocking, it will retard or advance the timing, which hinders performance.

On brand new bmw's with vanos, I can't honestly see that much of a loss in power.

That's not universally true. The 3series 6 cylinder didn't have a knock sensor until the E36 body style in 1991. My dad's 1989 Chevy S-10 pickup doesn't have a knock sensor.

Thank you! I am going to use what in the manual. Besides I don't need a warranty issue which might not be covered.

ps.. I visited 2 dealerships recently and both didn't know about the sliptronic issue. Maybe it's been cleared up, maybe they're sly. The dealerships said they haven't heard of any issues. Really! they also haven't heard of this board room.
