I have doen alittle research and learned that the milage is not only saved in the Instrument Cluster (IC), but also in the Headlight Control Unit (HCU) and the key. Is this true?
I'm looing at buying a 2003 330i froman auction, it is a stolen recovery and the IC is missing.
I was planning to buy and place a new IC in the car thiking it woul dupdate form the main computer, but learned it is not the case. That the IC, HCU, and key must all match in milage memory or the car will shut down thinking milage fraud. Does anyone know exactly how this works, how the systems (IC, HCU, key) work with each other? Etc.......
I don't want to buy this thing then find it will cost 2k to get the cluster and everythign working, then have 100k showing on the odometer. Thanks for any input

I believe if you take it to the dealer, they can reprogram the IC. People have busted the IC before while trying ot modify it and ahve had to buy new ones. They never reported any trouble due to the mileage.

If you're worried about mileage fraud, I'd take the car down to your local BMW dealer and get them to check the actual mileage. If it's a stolen recovery, why did the owner sell it? How badly damaged was it?

The mileage is definitely stored in the key. When you go in for service, they put the key in a reader and mileage is automatically downloaded into your service record.
