Oil Change Technique

I'm about to change the oil on my 2004 330i ZHP for the 1st time (myself) in between the regular recommended service interval. I'm using Mobil 1 and a new BMW filter. I had observed a BMW tech change my oil last time and he placed some oil within the filter area as well so upon start-up, there would not be any delay in getting any oil into the engine. My question is that I'm not quite sure of my memory on this one and need a bit of advice... once the oil filter is removed, what is the proper way to install the new oil filter in regards to making sure there is still oil within the oil filter container?

Thanks, thats awesome. Is it the same procedure for the M3? Has anyone changed their oil, without draining it from the bottom, and instead used one of those sealed oil vaccums, that sucks oil from where you add it? That seems much easier. It was mentioned that less oil was added, than suggested by the manual. Is that easy to tell when to stop adding? Can one see this? As you can tell I have not done an oil change myself since about 1991...and that was on my old 1985 300ZX!!

If anyone has any diagrams, or pics on changing the oil in an M3...that would be great (Tom....hint, hint [:)]

I just did my 330i w/ZHP for the second time. It is now approaching 20K miles (19772) on the odometer. I change it once in between the dealer changes and I use the Topsider multi purpose vacuum pump that I purchased from BMP Design of Tyler, TX. My crankcase took all 7 quarts of oil when I changed it yesterday.

I am old fashioned and don't use a pump. I have a set of Rhino ramps that I drive mine up on and then drain them the way every garage in the world drains it.

I don't think you can fill the filter holder as it will drain right out. It is always empty when I open mine. This is not like a standard oil filter which you can fill on some vehicles depending on the filter orientation. I have never tried to fill it.
