I know how you feel. I had a similar question because I felt the 15000 mi between oil change was too long. I decided to change my oil one time in between the scheduled maintenances, so arond every7500 mi.(dont know how much that is in km). I think most do the same. If you decide to go the the dealership and get it done once in between the sheduled free ones you will have to pay extra for it. If you do do this make sure to remeber to have them NOT reset your onboard computers next service due mileage so you still get your free one on time. Otherwise you can kearn to do it yourself using a synthetic oil. Thats what im planning on doing. Goodluck!

yes, 15K miles is a little too long so:

have it changed every 7500 miles ...

pay for first oil change #1,#3,#5,#7 and have the dealer give you a free one on #2,#4,#6,#8

Synthetic oil lasts for 20,000 miles. The only downside is that the oil gets dirty and synthetic oil is expensive.
I think I'm worse than you guys...I only have 1,400 miles on my car and I'm going to get an oil change this week (but then again, my car doesn't use synthetic oil). [?|]

It sound like you have all been suckered it by the advertising of Jiffy Lube type businesses.

Your BMW recommends changing the oil every 15K miles. Synthetic oil is very different to regular oil so 15K is OK. If your driving the car on a race track you may need to change more often but if not 15K is fine. BMW is not the only company that has the 15K oil change recommendation, Porsche has the same recommendation.

330i and like it ...

im not sure if i agree with you completely

you are right ... some of this is advertising ...

however 15000 miles it way too much for the oil filter to take ... and thats been scientifically proven

i know bmw says its ok ... and it probably is ok if you expect 80K miles out of your engine ...

remember if cars never broke down or got old ... new cars would never be sold ...

youve already spent 30,000+ on a car ... might as well take in every 7500 and get the oil change

I plan on changing every 7500 miles. It's usually the filter that goes before the oil does. What you prolly should do is change the filter every 5000 and the oil can go up to 10,000 miles. Still, that makes it confusing so I'll prolly just do both at 7500. Like hell I'm gonna follow what BMW recommends for oil changes. Their warranty ends at 50,000. What they consider "lifetime" is 100,000. I expect my car to last longer than that which is why I'm gonna change the transmission fluid even though it's "lifetime"

Synthetic lasts quite a bit longer and definately has better lubrication properties. If you are really worried about the oil filter not lasting, simply replace it at 7500 mi. It's right there on top and you won't spill any oil. I change my oil every 7000 mi and I run synthetic. I live in a very dusty environment, so I change it more often. I would absolutely change the oil very soon on a new car, 1500 mi - you will be amazed at what you catch on the first oil change.
