start my car when leaving work today and the door ajar light is on saying thatthe drivers door is still open, it is closed. I tried opening and closing a few times and nothing happend. I drive home about 20 minutes later, still on. i tried locking the doors then unlocking and opening and nothing. So, next i tried finding a sensor that senses when the door is closed to see if it is stuck on, nothing visable that detects when the door shuts. next step i tried was disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours. First, i couldnt find the battery, its in the trunk, which i have never seen on a car and assume BMW has gotta be one of the only ones that do this. Anyways, disconnecting the battery worked resetting something. So, my question is why did this happen and is there a quicker way to fix this? Oh, and my car has only 1300 miles on it.

Take it to your dealership, probably a loose wire somewhere. Or you could just wait until it happens again. Your solution to disconnect the battery was absolutely perfect, although you only need to wait a few minutes. BMW puts the battery in the trunk as one step to achieve that near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution. Normally, the battery is in the front; by having it in the back, it takes weight away from the front of the car and adds it to the rear... the win !!

Yeah and the replacement batteries will be more expensive becasue the battery exaughst has to be vented through a tube rather than being "open" in the engine compartment.

But anyway, YOU DISCONNECTED YOUR BATTERY?!?! Did that mess up your security keys and components? I was always told in doing certain repairs to only discconect the positive (or negative) because when the electricity compenents go off electricity they ahve a theft precaution in them.

But your car is just fine after completely disconnecting the battery?

I can't speak for models before MY '01, but I had to replace the battery in my '01 X5 2 months ago and had that puppy out of the vehicle for hours. Took it with me to the Interstate battery distributor here locally to get the right replacement/vent kit/core cost for it. Put the new one in and the truck was fine, everything worked as before. The computer storage for all the critical info is not in electrically eraseable media for good reason.

One thing to note, my DSC light and my ABS light were lit when I first started it. Both lights went out immediately after I drove the vehicle.
