Tiny Orange Lights In My Car

Hi. [wave] I am posting as a guy now.

Is there any practical use for the two orange lights that are always coming from the upper light control unit above my head?

They reflects on my shifter and are very cool but considering BMW Engineers' intelligence there must be a better use for those.

If they are what I think they are, they're very dim lights and their purpose is for night time driving. It is such that when you wanna change some stereo settings or adjust climate control, and you are driving on a very dark road, you can see your hand (rather than blindly trying to "feel" for the controls").

I love those little orange lights! They kinda spooked me at first, then when I realized just how handy they are I wonder why everyone else doesn't do this in their vehicles. A minor detail that makes me appreciate the car so much more. Now THAT'S some intelligent engineering!

Um... isn't there backlight for like every control when you have headlights on? They illuminate very well so those orange lights do not help much at all.

I think you missed the part that states "you can see your hand". The extra light isn't to help you see the buttons (as they are indeed all backlit) but to see where your HAND it at. It helps in rural areas or that long stretch of highway between cities where there are no bright street lights to be found.

Yeah we are spoiled. I didn't understand the lights until a trip from Detroit to Lansing, and was out in no-mans-land for about 1/2 hour. Not a single artificial light source for miles and miles..

BMW advertises those lights as "ambient lighting". They are actually LEDs and are intended to provide non-reflective light within the vehicle for the purpose that Mr.Elussive and dzervit stated,

Nice chest dzervit......

i like it. discovered it right after my first night driving.. i think while trying to set up the radio station, and seeing my hand all red.. now i show it to everyone that comes into the car at night [thumb]

i could totally live w/out it, but it's cool, and i really like the ambience of it all. i even saw a halogen kit for it, but white light might be annoying.
