Hi all:

I'm going to be a first-time BMW owner in about two month! Yup, I placed the order for my 2004 330xi w/ NAV, Sports, Premium, 6-Speed, kitchen sink this week, and I'm super anxious to finally lay my hands on one of these babies.

I was going back and forth between the X3 3.0 and the 330xi, but at the endof the day a first model year scares me... so I got an E46.

It is rather a rather distressing commentary on American drivers to learn that in order to get a high quality (with bells and whistles) car... but in a stick shift, I have to go to the factory... oh well... according to my dealers computer, there are only 2 manual 330xi in production for the US (until I ordered mine, or course).

I currently drive a 2001 Volvo S60 T5. While I love it, I'm looking forward to DVD-based Nav, All-Wheel Drive and BMW fit-n-finish.

My question to the board is... what do you reccoemnd I do to this guy? Should I mod it (Dinan would be the only option I might consider), I'm seeking advice from experienced BMW owners... what would you do if you had it to do all over again? :)

Thanks in advance.

Dinan's really expensive for what you get. It's high quality stuff, but you're mainly paying for the warranty. I'd mod it, but wait a while. You'll likely be pretty enraptured by the driving experience that it should hold you for possibly a year before the itch hits. Since you're coming from a T5, the power jump won't be as huge, but the ride and handling will be totally different. There aren't too many parts that will make a huge difference in a N/A engine so you might just stick with handling and appearance mods for a while.

While I know that Dinan is a bit more $$... I'm willing to cover the aditional costs in exchange for warrenty and reputation.

It's probably a good call to wait a bit... but I don't want to wait to long... technically I am dropping a couple of a horses (about 20 to be precise) going to the BMW I-6 3.0 from the Volvo T5, but I am confident All-Wheel Drive and the 6-speed (instead of the five speed matched to the Volvo) will asuage my need for speed...

I don't have my production number yet... my dealer says I should have it next week sometime.. and he did mention I could track it through the web site.

I'm scheduled to go into production during the 3rd week of the year.. with a "guestimate" delivery of end of February.

Welcome aboard and congrats, if you have the money then I would definitely recommend Dinan mods. That's one of the best part about owning a car.
