I have had a look at the car and seem to see that the radiator fan was attempting to spin is that what its supose to do. Abd if it supose to spin what temp should it kick in.

They only replaced the water pump and a sensor which stopped the car from starting can't rember what type of censor it was

It is probably an issue with your radiator fan. On newer cars, the radiator fan(s) is now electronically controlled by your engine, rather than based on vehicle speed, which is the way it used to be. So when you're sitting in traffic, for example, your radiator fan should be kicking in. Does the radiator fan never work, or is it only when the car is sitting still?? It must be an issue with the sensor or something that controls the radiator fan.

If you're saying the fan wasn't spinning, then that's your problem. Could be that they forgot to reconnect a fan wire when they reinstalled the radiator.

Anyway, you need to take it back to the shop that fixed it and let them figure out what they did wrong.

It looks like your car still has the dreaded Siemens fan. When the 3.0L first came out for the first couple of months BMW used good-'ol Bosch fans. Then they decided to switch to the "newest" design Siemens fans in about August 2000, for the 5-er, X5 and 330's. That's when the problems started to arise.

The fan would fail and cause the overheating. One X5 even burned all the way to the ground in someone's garage - a nasty short sparked the fuel.

The fans should have been replaced under the recall, but yours may have been omitted somehow.... Take her back for warranty.

Another reason could be the Thermostat. But in the E46 if it fails it gets stuck open, not closed. So overheating should not occur. I had two thermostats fail on me in 30K miles already. [confused]
