My check engine light came on and wouldn't go off all yesterday and today. I couldn't understand it because the car was driving just beautifully.

So I took the car over to AutoZone and they pluged their dealy into my car and gave me the SAE code of P0441 EVAP Control System Purge Flow Fault.

I was expecting the worst...that sounds costly. But after searching on line I read something about the gas cap.

Sure enough. I go out to the car and found the cap resting in place but not screwed on (my Dad had borrowed the car and refilled the gas as a favor).

Can you believe that! Just the gas cap. I'm so happy.

you should be most people bring it to the dealer and pay a hundred bucks to get the light out most of the time it is just a loose cap

Can a gas cap go "bad"? I've had this happen twice in the last 2 weeks or so. One time it happened right after filling up and the other time it happened I was at half a tank, cruising down the highway. After readjusting the cap and letting it sit overnight, the light goes off. The car recently passed emissions too. [scratch]

I would say yes, a gas cap can go bad. It has a rubber seal on it and if that rubber got old enough, the seal would probably not be made causing the code aforementioned to be set.
