just thought i should share this interesting mod with you guys. i was recently interested in taking my car to bmw and getting the performance package upgrade for like 3 or 4k or something like that, when i stumbled upon this thread at e46fanatics.com. paddle shift retrofit?!? this got me exited and now i realize that all i wanted was the ability to use the paddles... it's not like i'd be adding significant power with the package. what do you guys think? i think i might spring for it, not to mention you get the nice sport wheel.

Those little thumb paddles do nothing for me. I like the floor shifter steptronic. It's so much fun and it simulates the traditional manual shift as well as any traffic congested NY driver could want [driving2]

I don't think it simulates a manual transmission at all. You just push it forward or backward, it's not actually rowing gears.
As for the mod, I think it's a pretty cool idea, but not worth doing. These auto trannies with manual mode often have a shifting delay. It's not the way manual or SMG is, when you wanna shift, you do it instantly. Auto trannies with manual mode never let me forget that I'm still driving an auto, and for that reason, I don't think the mod is worth doing. The car is best when driven in the regular automatic mode anyways so there's just no point, IMO.
But if you have the $$ to spend on it, it's definitely cool.
