So I have my lease setup for next year living at a brand new apartment pretty close to campus...now I'm wondering should I get covered parking? or go for the garage? The main factor in deciding is that covered parking is $360 a year and a garage is $720 a year....both seem really expensive to me...should I juss go for uncovered parking and use a car cover? it would be a hassle putting the cover on because of the texas sun.....

can you get a discount from your insurance company for garage parking? if it is considerably high i would invest the money. not that the discount can make up for the total costs but at least a little and your car is savely stowed from weather and dumb people doing dumb things

I would def. go with the garage. Honestly, $720 a year for the garage sounds like a bargain. I paid $150.00 a month for garage parking from Sept. 2001- Sept. 2003 while going to UCLA...that's $1800.00 a year.

Keeping the car in a garage is safer, will really save your paint, dash, leather and your ass in the summer sun (makes the A/C run less too....less A/C, less gas used).

Heh, less A/C, more power to the wheels. [;)]

Garage...[thumb] . Besides offering protection from the weather and parking lot mishaps, it will give you a good place to wax your ride. Car covers are okay as long as everything is clean and dry.

You said "covered parking"...doesn't that mean it hides the car from the sun? If that's the case, just get covered parking and let it sit outside. TX doesn't get cold so you don't have to worry about your baby sitting outside in freezing temps. And you think $720/year for garage parking is a lot, come checkout NYC...you'll be paying ~$500/month for the same shit. [fake]

I'd say go for the garage. I had two cars when I lived in an apartment and rented a garage. Not only can you store stuff in the garage, but you won't get door dings. Definately a benefit.

Yea I think the covered parking should block most of the sun, but I'm still worried about drunkies messing with my car...but 720 is a lot for a college student.....

$720 a year breaks down to a little less than $2 a day. Is your car worth $2 a day? IMO paying more to have your car in the garage places it with other cars that are appreciated by their owners, which, more often than not, leads to a lot less damage. Just my $.02

I'd go for the garage. Covered parking still allows sun baking your car at some angles and wind blowing crap all over your car. Doesn't Texas get pretty cold in some areas too? At the very least take the covered parking. You don't want to leave your BMW out in the Texas sun. That's why I let my baby sit while I was finishing up school. Can you imagine, having a brand new BMW but not driving her just so she wouldn't have to sit, uncovered, in 110+ degree heat with dirt blowing up on her and instead could relax in a covered garage.

Good point. Pesronally, I would definitely do garage parking. Come on Slacker, you've got a BMW, you gotta be able to drop down the $$$ for situations just like this! [:)]

garage is definitely a plus. but shaded car park is better than none.
60/month for a garage ain't that bad. at least it's still $20 cheaper than what's offered at my apt.

one more thing to consider is how often you'll be using the garage and what time?
it's pointless to get a garage when you are always on the go (like park on campus, etc.) like my situation my car sits in an open car-park more than in my apt. so the only time my car is in the garage is at night after work and weekends (provided i don't go out.)

another option would be share with a friend at campus. for example you park 1,3,5 and he parks 2,4,6 and sunday would be a bonus for first come first serve basis.
