Performance sacrifice with AWD models?

Generally speaking, how much driving enjoyment, if any, do you sacrifice by going with an AWD 3-series versus a standard rear wheel drive? For example, in dry road conditions, does a 2001 330i handle or accelerate noticably differently than a 2001 330xi?

Thanks.

Hello, fellow Oregonian! [wave]

330i will handle better. It comes with a sport suspension, sits lower and has lower profile tires (assuming SP).

Even in the wet the "i" model is better than the "Xi". BMW AWD system is not intelligent, like Quattro, ATTESSA, HICAS or the one Porsche is using. BMW has a permanent power distribution, not adaptable to the driving conditions, like the others. I drove both and did not enjoy the "Xi" as much as the "i".

Acceleration will be slower once you moved off the line due to higher weight of the Xi models. Car magazines managed to get better 0-60 numbers for the AWD, but not without dumping the clutch at 6000RPM.[ohcrap]

Unless you drive in the snow often, AWD BMW is not necessary. If you do occasional skiing trip and such, just get a set of Snow tires and you'll be fine. [thumb]

I'm a performance minded driver and currently have a 2002 330xi. I got the AWD because I thought I needed it to get around in the Minnesota winter. Having put 20,000 miles on the car and attended 3 BMW CCA club driving scools including a winter driving school complete with ice skid pad and ice slalem corse, I'm selling the AWD and buying a 2004 330i w/ sport package (I'll get a Blizzaks for winter).

Don't get me wrong, the 330xi is a hoot to drive, but it can not compare to the 330i RWD in performance (straight line or turns) or in the fun to drive catagory.

Regards,
