plug gap?

Does anyone have a suggestion on the spark plug gap on an '81 320. I might be crazy but it seems that somethings not right with the setting they come in, 0.0024''. I've tried different gaps and I'm stuck.

.024 inch

.024 to .028 inch is my remembered setting.

.024 starts better but .028 is smoother at high RPM and my recommendation.
