today i was driving down 287 going about 95 or so. there was a police trap area on the left so i began to break slowly and then a cop was standing outside his car shooting some kind of radar gun i think towards my car. i breaked down to 80 in a 65 and the cop stormed into his car. He did not come after me though, is it possible to get a ticket in the mail. or what are ur thoughts on this situation.

No, he probably shot his radar at you, but didn't get a reading. That whole ticket-in-the-mail thing is too sketchy, it's too easy to fight. He probably was able to tell that you were speeding, but didn't shoot the radar in time....I guess you slowed-down just in time !! I don't know, either way, I am sure you are safe, otherwise the cop would have been smiling, stepping back into his car.

If he was outside the car aiming a "radar" unit is was most likely Lidar (Laser). When he "stormed" to his car he may have been radioing ahead to see if there was another radar unit in the area. By the way, what is a speed trap? I mean was the limit posted and the officer was obviously standing in the open, where is the "trap"? Yes you can get a ticket in the mail in some states, but an MrE says it is not used widely because of the legal complications.

Visiting my brother in NY last week, he got two tickets with pic's in the mail.. one for running a red light and one for speeding... $50 for the red light, not sure what the speeding one was.. he gets them regularly (at least one a month) and pays them right away, so far no insurance intervention..... this has been in use in NY for a while now...

In PA they don't send speeding tickets in the mail. Never heard of that in Jersey either.

I think he was trying to scare you, which he did. Next time something like that happens, floor it and pray there's an exit coming up.
He he - I did exactly that about 4 weeks ago! Beautiful top down day, coming back from Phila. I was doing about 85 (4 lane divided highway) and I saw speed trap lines painted on the road. Looked over my shoulder and the cop was timing cars. I hit the hooks hard, got it down to 70 after the 1st trap, 60 after the 2nd trap. But the limit was 55.

I looked back again and he was ROLLING, but he disappeared as I went around a bend. I knew there was a short downhill exit coming so I jumped on the gas and took the exit. The whole time my wife was laughing her head off. I didn't see him coming down the ramp, so I figured I had lucked out.

I drove a few blocks up to get back on the highway at the next entrance and sitting at the cross street red light was THE COP! I stopped for the light and had visions of him pulling in front of me, jumping out with his gun and telling me to assume the position!!

The light turned green, ON CAME HIS LIGHT AND SIREN, and my wife starts laughing at me again, saying "YOUR BUSTED!"! Sheesh!! Then he pulled over the CAR DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME!!!! [rofl] [rofl] Talk about sweating bullets!!!!

It's very common in AZ - we were actually the first state (I believe) to use photo radar. Now we have photo lights on all major intersections in Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler, and Mesa for red light running also. IMHO - they all suck.

To the best of my legal knowledge, they can't send you a ticket in the mail without a photograph to prove who was driving. So unless that radar had a camera attached (it didn't, relax), you're fine.

good story Kirby [thumb]

i have one to share myself. a few weeks ago i was coming back from work on a backroad. i turned right onto a road and a cop was right behind me, keep in mind i usually do abut 50 on this road because there are never any cops (speed limit is 35, this is the only non-freeway road that i dip on) so i'm getting impatient with this cop on my ass going about 38mph. finally he turns off a few blocks before a bridge.

like a breath of fresh air i get cruising again, about 45mph this time, i see a light not too far away turn yellow, figuring that after enduring such torment of the speed limit for so long i deserved to make this light. well i didn't, it turned red and i just said to myself "ya know what, eff it" and hit the gas and flew through it. just as i get to the middle of the intersection i look to my right and there is a cop sitting there. i was blatently speeding and had gunned through blatently red light. but there were some trees on the corner just as i got through the intersection, and circuit city just to the right

so i dipped hard into the lot, ripped up the ebrake and ran in the store. i'm sure i got in the lot and out of my car before he could even get a jump at me. but i was SURE he was going to be sitting next to my car when i came out of the store. fortunatly when i came out there were 2 other E36 coupe's in the lot, one black, one blue and no cop waiting for me.

yooowwwwww, i learnd my lesson though. [wiggle]

If they send you a picture of you speeding, can you send them a picture of the money to pay the fine?

I got a ticket in AZ, east of Flagstaff. I was doing about 110, came around a wide sweeping bend, saw this funny car with red lights on top sitting between the east and west bound lanes. In CA that would be fire marshall, CHP has red and blue lights (or none). So I blow by him, I look at him, he looks at me, definate eye contact. I look back and he's pulling out, disco's spinning. And now I think, how far to the next exit... Instead I just pull over and wait for him. As we are talking, he tells me he was looking forward to the chase, but since I didn't do anything stupid, he wrote me for doing 65 in a 55 zone. A short while later, it started getting dark, and it was starting to snow as a I cruised into Flagstaff. I decided to spend the night. The next morning, as I head out of town, I see crews chaning the speed limit signs from 55 to 65. When I got home, I called the dinky town court phone number listed on the back of the envelope (the officer was kind enough to provide one so I could mail my fine in) and explained that I got a ticket for doing 65, but I think the speed limit was 65. The court clerk said "Could be, why don't you come on in and we'll check it out, see what the judge says." Hmm, 10 hour drive or $140 ticket. I paid the fine.

Krafty04, do you know where are those cameras that take a picture if you are speeding? I live in NY and don't feel like getting a ticket for seeding, thanks. BTW Is there any points if the ticket is sent by mail? I think it's just a fine because they can't proove it was you driving the car and not your twin brother/sister or something.
