Power Braking: bad?

When I'm lucky and find a car to race in my auto 330xi that I feel could beat me or keep up with me, I usually Power Brake or Brake-Torque the engine to about 2700 then let go of the brake of course, giving me what seems to be a better start (still no wheelslip w/ DSC off though). Is this really bad for the car? Does it help acceleration any amount?

Over time it gets bad for the transmission, yeah.

But do a start without revving up to 2700 and then do with while revving and you'll see the acceleration.

It helps you win the race but at the same time will hurt your transmission if its something that you do alot. Just dont do it alot (and NEVER rev your engine neutral before moving it into drive) and you should be ok.

Dude...do you love your car? A stupid race is not worth the potential wear and tear....it is definately NOT good for your car...and spinning the wheels is NOT a good way to start...you want to GAIN traction.

By the way what is this fascination with street racing???

I think it's harsh on the torque converter, the tranny, and the shafts including the diff, if you get rear wheels to spin while standing still, it's also wears out the brake pads super fast. What does everyone else think?

I have three BMW's and do not street race. It is not safe, wise or responsible. Although your driving abilities may be above par, the other persons may not. I have witnessed to much injury as a result of street racing. I get my urges out at the track on BMW driving event days, High Performance Driving Schools, Safety Schools and Autocross.

It can't be good.

Volvo had an issue with '80s transmissions. The Emissions test in some states required the engine of the car to be run at 2500 to 3500 RPM in DRIVE for 30 seconds to take the reading. After the test, Volvos with Automatic ZF transmissions were dropping dead.

Volvo determined that it was the test that caused the failure and would not cover it under warranty. The testing standard was changed for Volvos.

This was also reported to happen to BMWs as well. BMW has used the ZF transmission in some cars. Here is a link to a BrickBoard thread, a Volvo board I visit on occasion.

I sometimes polish the paint on the hood with a dirty rag that was laying in
the sand. Is this bad for my car?

Only if it is beach sand from a Southern coast beach. East coast and west coast beach sand is ok, as is river sand. [joke]

You guys are [screwy] , if you bothered to read his post carefully... he said "no wheelslip"

In my opinion, 2700rpm's is just starting to put a pre-load on the torque converter... If he was loading up 3300-3500, then I would agree 100% it could be damaging over the long run, if done constantly, with a polishing rag consisting of beach sand from a southern coast beach.

Oh, and street racing is dangerous[mad]
