Problem Switching gear in reverse

Hi,

I wander if it has anything to do with the cold weather that we are having, or it is a problem with the car itself.

It has been 3 times when I strated my car and put it in reverse, I had a hard reverse shift.
I heard a gear grinding sounds [?|] Ouch!!!!

I know I pushed the clutch all the way. In fact, I released it and repush it all the way, and the problem still presists.

After driving the car for a few minutes, I tried again and it went away.

Has any of you experience this?

I have had a similar problem (last time was a week ago). I clutch, then shift slowing into reverse, and it grinds. it is definately because of the cold, even into second gear my synchro's lag a bit if its super super cold out. my problem with reverse was at about 10 degrees.

just don't ram it in, give it a tick for the synchro's to catch up with you in the cold.

As Dan and Tim have suggested, just take it slow (don't ram the shifter into reverse), or shift it into a forward gear before putting it in reverse. Shifting it into a forward gear first stalls the input shaft of the transmission, allowing you to then shift into reverse without needing the reverse syncros to do anything. The hard shifting and then grinding is just that the syncros are operating stiffly and slowly because the fluid in the cold transmission is cold and therefore a little bit higher viscosity than when warm. The higher viscosity fluid slows the operation of such parts as the syncros. My tranny is the same way, except first and second are stiff when the car is cold as well. After about 5 minutes of driving, the fluid warms up enough and everything works normally.

Cold weather makes the whole car cold. So during those first few minutes of when the car is warming up in the cold weather, the gearbox is also cold and tends to be very notchy...in fact, difficult at times. Shifting into reverse or 1st gear is noticeably more difficult than normal, but once the car warms up, the gearbox warms up and the "issues" go away. As for the grinding noise, that has happened to me once or twice before when I randomly put it in reverse, but I don't think it is due to the cold weather.

The dealer also adviced me to let the cur sit idle for 1 minute before putting it into any gear.

Thank Y'all!

You guys are great resources.[thumb]
