Programming new key

Hey all,

I was just wondering if it is possible to program a new key without going to the dealer. Here's the story: The car was only given to me with one key, and the spare key was lost by the dealership so they ordered another one, I picked it up today, they said it might not work and might have to be programmed by the dealership (I didn't have my car with me today so they couldn't do it).

So I was just wondering if any of you knew how to do it to save me from going back to the dealership. Thanks for any help!

They will just sit in your car, turn the key to on and off 3 times and then run through a long sequence of button pushing on the remote. So if you can do that or find an explanation on it, you're set. I've seen it done twice and would still take it in. I doubt they will charge you if one of the techs can jump in and do it quickly. Make sure you use the new key in the ignition to drive over there. - that is how the key is charged.

The new key doesn't even start the car, it just unlocks all of the doors from the driver's door and moves the ignition switch to position 1.

I thought it was something similar to what you said which is why I asked, I'll google it and see if I can find an answer. Thanks for the reply.

Post your findings b/c I would like to get a second key also. I thought I came across a site that you can buy a key for $40 and they give you instructions to program the key. If I find the site again I will post it.

Using the self programming sequence only allows the key to remotely lock/unlock the door. If your key doesn't even crank the ignition it may require activation by the dealer.

Yeah, I just ran another google search and found this:

1. Open the car doors using the remote function of your working key.

2. Get in and close (don’t lock) all the doors.

3. Put the key in the ignition and switch momentarily to position 1 which is
the first position when you turn the key clockwise. This is the accessory
position. Don’t stay in position 1 longer than 5 seconds; then turn the key
back to the off position.

4. Remove the key.

5. On the key transmitter, press and hold the unlock button. Press and release the lock button three times within 10 seconds while still pressing the unlock button.

6. release the unlock button.

7. The system indicates re-programming by locking and immediately unlocking
the door locks.

8. If you want to do more remotes, you must do each within 30 seconds of
step 7 for the preceding key. You just need to repeat steps 5 through 7 for
each key after the first.

Now the spare key works as the remote as you said, Tom, but it still doesn't start the car. I'll try go to BMW this week, been busy lately so I'll make sure I fit it in, I don't understand why it doesn't start the car though... especially considering it unlocks it, what's the point??

Well I went today and it's all fixed now. While I was there I pointed out to the service dept. manager that my interior was making an annoying "click" noise everytime I went over a bump, so we went for a drive and he heard it (surprising since it seems like you need to twist some of these guys arms to convince them there is a problem... especially a noise) I now have to book it in and they are going to remove one of the seats to see if they can isolate the problem and then fix it... dang. One day without my car. It'll be tough.
