My service rep recently told me that BMW had informed them that their testing showed that there was no longer a need for me to put premium fuel in my car. Instead, I was told that I could safely use mid-grade or even regular fuel. And, the car would run fine.

Being a skeptic by nature, and having a number of Dinan add-on's on my car, I posted this query on anther BMW related board. The advice I got was to call Dinan. I did. I was told that it would be best for me to use a fuel of at least 91 octane in my car because that's what their products are made to run on. (I have a Dinan throttle, exhaust system, cold air return, engine and trans chips.)

My service rep still says that I don't have to use premium. And the service manager backs him up. What do you guys think. For $.20 a gallon, is it worth it?

Your service rep and service manager are correct in that the car will run on less than 91 octane, however you will not be getting the full potential from the car and even more so with the Dinan add ons. Further even though your car will compensate for the lower octane you will over time do damage to the engine. It is not worth the 20 cents per gallon savings and tell your service guys to do some research!

well said Dan [thumb]

cars have knock sensors that retard engine performance if lower octane fuel (which has lower heat tolerance) is used.

now retardation of the engine performance maybe minimal, but for 20cents? common! esp since the percentage difference is minimal due to rising gas prices.

btw Cary, i'm in Troy.. and went to HS in bloomfield hills. small world!
