[thumb] I am in love with driving my bimmer. I have put my 323i through untold miles at present with little or no problems. I routinely visited my dealership under warrantee and visit my bimmer dude (independent bimmer service shop) every 7,500 for oil changes and service every 30,000 miles. I have a question, just after my 150,000-mile visit my upper most pulley began to make a squealing sound. Needless to say I immediately went back to the shop to see how bad this could be and was astonished to find out that this is not a new problem and was expected. My bimmer dude wants me to replace all three pulleys at the same time for a mere $480.00. Has anyone ever experienced this problem and do I need to replace them all or only the one that's bad. I was leaving for a business trip in my car the next day so I sprayed WD40 on it until I can arrange to service it. I have driven 600 miles with the temporary fix with no squealing whatsoever, I know I have to replace the bad pulley, but I would really like to keep using WD40 as a permanent solution.[driving2]

WD40 may let the pulley last a little longer due to the extra lubrication, but the pulley is already going bad and will get worse. If your mechanic has easy access to the other pulleys when he does the one that is going out, the cost of replacing all three may not be that much more than just replacing the one due to the labor of getting to the pulleys to begin with. Not to mention, you will have the peace of mind that all of the pulleys were replaced after 150,000 miles. You may never see a problem in the other pulleys at all or they could start to go in another week - you just never really know for sure.

Yep, I sprayed mine with WD-40 for several months to get some extra life out of it. But when they start to go, they only get more noisey. I've heard they can brake off which is not good. Mine was the uppermost one too!

Now I think occassionally I might hear another one going. Not sure yet.

That sounds like a great price to do all three. I'd go ahead and do that at 150,000 miles. Sounds like a sound thing to do.
