Wondering what brand of Oil Filter other e46'ers use when changing their own oil. Plan to purchase the oil extractor at Griot's Garage & do the maintenance myself, rather than paying $90+ a pop for an oil change... [thumbd]

Went to some online stores & found three different brands; Mann, Hengst, and Bosch (lowest to highest in price, respectively). Plan to use Mobil 1 TriSynthetic 5w-30 as I always have...

Any input?

Before trading my 323i in i used Wixs Oil Filters. I think they are the best on the market (thats what a mechanic told me). Good luck [thumb]

I have the oil extractor from Griot's, it works great just a little slow for 6.9 quarts. Over an hour! I use the Mann filters, having a tough time finding different brands that I can trust. I'm also looking at Hasting, & Wix, right now for my next oil change, haven't decided yet. Very little info available about filters, testing and reviews. Nothing official or scientific, mostly people like us, doing our own evaluations by cutting up diff filters and checking the construction and media inside. Some flow rates are given but again they are open to debate. No standards to compare against. I am seriously considering an after market add on from Amsoil! What I have decided is all over the counter filters are not made for the extended oil drains of todays top synthetic oils. 3 - 5,000 seems about right depending on your idea of what is acceptable. I'm taking another 3,600 mile round trip, all next week and when I return It'll be time for me to decide. Good luck, let us know what you decide?

Are oil changes free with all BMW's, mine are free as long as I own my car.
The oil services and any other scheduled maintenance are free under warranty , However long it is depends on the year of the vehicle . My 325 is a '02 with a 3yr/35k warranty .

Your oil changes are free according to BMW's maintenance schedule which is every 12 months or 15k miles I believe but alot of us like to change our oil alittle more frequent than that. I like to relube at 7500 miles.

I also have the oil extractor from Griot's. After the first quart of used oil was extracted, I pumped the handle again and this really speeded up the extraction of all of the oil. I think I extracted the 6+ quarts in about 10 minutes.

No fancy "extractor" here. The 17 mm drain plug is about as easy as it gets.

Go to Walmart or Sams and get a 5 quart container of Mobil 1 5w-30 for just under $20. I change my oil every 7,500 on average, so I don't feel any need to buy any fancy filters either. At 120,500 miles, my E46 hasn't blown up yet. In fact, it's running as smooth as ever.

Warranty expiring real soon..

I hope this isn't too off topic. I don't plan on changing oil or stuff like that since I don't know how. I'm currently at 49,084 miles and my warranty expires at 50k. So I just called BMW and found out their maintenance upgrade (6 yrs/ 100,000 miles) will cost $1295.00. Need some convincing before i fax back the credit card authorization form to them!

Thanks!!

I use whatever the dealer has. The BMW oil is cheaper than the Mobile 1 I can find. Easier to get the filter there too.

As for the maintenance warranty, if you must have your car have its service at teh dealer, it's ok. Inspection II can cost $800 or so. Plus, brakes cost a ton at the dealer.
