somethings definatly loose back there. hmmm i have no idea what it could be. shake the car while its on the ground or try jacking it up and see if you can get the same noise, that may help you pinpoint it.

I agree with Vlad, the rear upper shock mounts are a weak spot in the 3s. If it is the mounts use the later model E36 or E46 mounts or the E30 convertible mounts. They all drop in and are an upgrade to the original. The newer E46 mounts seem to be the best at this time and are less than half the price of billet mounts. You may also want to check the rear sway bar mounts. Under hard use they can also be a problem. Good luck.

I agree with Wadula. There is a good possibility that it is a wheel bearing. I had the same problem myself. I would check it out soon though I had a friend who drove his till the wheel almost came off.

It should not take too long to check out the 3 possibilities mentioned above. Give it a try and let us know. If it is a sway bar mount, it will be easily visible from underneath the car. A bad shock mount will be easy to spot once the trunk inner panel is removed.

Remove the trunk inner side panel. The tail light housing can be removed to make it easier, it comes out easily. There should be a rubber cup over the top of the retaining nut and mount. Remove the rubber and look at the mount. The upper half of the mount is now visible and deteriorization of the rubber mount can be seen. Look for cracks, pieces missing, missing hardware, movement of the shock etc.

I had a similar problem with my 325, check the mounting clips on the back of the rear inboard (the one that sits against the piston) brake pads, The clip was broken on mine and allowed the pad to rattle in the caliper. I fixed mine with a big blob of high temperature silicone sealer.

just to clarify my repair......... the big blob of silicone sealer was put on the back of the pad to hold it in position on the piston.
