I have a 2004 330ci with 1,200 miles.

Have any of you noticed a rattling noise when you turn off the engine? It's happens for like a split second towards the end of the engine turning off. Something to be concerned about?

Thanks!

Well, my '87 325 can hardly be compared to a 2004 330 with only 1200 miles on it, but my car does the same thing when I shut it off. I think it's pretty common on the older sixes, but I know that I never experienced it in the 2000 Z3 2.3 or 2000 323i that I spend two summers behind the wheel of.

I used to hear that noise from my LS1 V-8 but it was a pushrod engine and the valves would clack a bit at the end of the shutdown sequence.

But I have never heard the sound from my 330Ci.

I have a '04 330Ci, and I have also noticed that rattle once and a while when the engine is comming to rest. I'm not exactly excited to admit this, but I have noticed many 330's do this from time to time. Usually when this happens the engine seems to get a little bit rough when shutting down, by this I mean shaking or stumbling like it's misfiring. So it's probably the exhaust or a heat-shield rattling like Vlad said. I honestly wouldn't worry about it, doesn't seem to major. But if in doubt, take that puppy in and have it looked at, maybe it's a different noise and you do have something loose.

it's a 2004, take it in anyway as you have guarantee on it. you will not have to pay for it so just don't take a risk and have it checked. that's at least what i would do.

It's probably coming from the exhaust, and if it is what I think it is, it's perfectly normal. This sound occurs for about half a second, exactly when you turn the car off...my Jetta started doing it after I got my aftermarket muffler installed, and my G35C has been doing it since day one. No big deal, just a normal noise of the car. [;)]

Is this still the current thinking on the engine shut off rattle?

Samlee4444, did you ever take it to the dealer?

I've noticed this sound recently and want to drop the car off at the dealer for a quick look see. I would like to go in with as much info as possible, so any other info/opinions would be welcomed.

My 330Cic does the same thing. I didn't think of it much. If you have any feedback from the dealership, please share the info. I would like to know if it's a big problem.
thanks a lot!

My 2004 330cic with 1,700 miles does the same.....did it from day one. Actually my cousins' 2003 325i does the same. We have both taken it to the dealer (two different dealers that are very far apart & unrelated)...and both dealers said it is normal....and all of them do it sometimes. Nothing is broken, loose, mis-firing etc... Just relax and drive!!!!!

There are a lot of things that could make noise -- hoses, wires, etc. I dont think I would worry about it. My car does the same thing (and as someone said earlier -- an almost-17 year old car can't be compared to a new one, but I hear it on most newer cars I've been in too.

MrElussive is correct

I get that too. My car get garaged so i can localize the rattling. When I shut off the engine, the imbalance cause the car to shutter. I can reproduce the sound by stepping in and out of the car quickly. I believe it is the heat shield from the exhaust.

I finally figured out the rattling sound on my car. Its the parking brake. If you dont pull the brake tight, the rotor will slip a bit and make that sound.
