Rear fog lights

It's starting to get foggy in SF as it gets to the winter season. I was wonder if it's possible to install rear fog lights in the back of one of the tail light assembly so people don't stick their noses in my ass. [shake] I've seen an E46 coupe once in the area that had rear fogs on the trunk light assembly just below the reverse lights on both sides and it looks OEM. Does BMW sell an OEM rear fog kit for the E46? I have a 01 325i.

The holes are there to fit a light assembly through...at least they are on my Cic. I'm assuming that rear fogs are standard issue in Europe. We even have (what appears to be) a rear fog light indicator on the instrument cluster. Of course it never lights up.

I think that indicator you're seeing is the warning light that comes on if your rear lights have a failure (bulb burns out etc, then it'll kick on, and light up the appropriate 'behind the car' light icon.).

You're about in the only place in the US where asking about rear fog lights is a honest question! Wish I had some info to share, but I've not heard of them, or seen them even on some of the more tricked out Euro cars (I figure someone in a Euro car would make a note of displaying them in their car pics).

We've got some Euro folks here, maybe they can comment?

Section 8,

The indicator light that I'm talking about is located right next to the front fog light indicator. If memory serves, it is directly to the right of the front fog indicator. If you look at the area in direct sun you will see an icon that looks like the front fog, yet it is pointing in the opposite direction and the "rays" from the light are pointed straight out, not down like the front fog icon. These are located in whole different pod than the bulb out/door ajar indicators.

Link to diagram showing 2 bulbs (reverse and rear fog?) going into the trunk mounted lighting assembly. [confused]

If you guys are interested I can make a picture of the foglight tomorrow... let me know
Oh yeah you're right about the dashboard light, the rear foglight is next to the front foglight (when installed on the car of course). I don't get it why BMW USA doesn't deliver the cars with rear fog lights. It doesn't cost shit. Collegues of mine who bought American cars and took them back to Holland had to install custom made fog lights on their cars in order to get their license plates (oh then it doesn't cost shit anymore....)

It's cuz 99.9% of Americans don't know what it's for and wouldn't use it properly. If it's on and not foggy, it's annoying as hell. BMW prolly saves $2 per car by not installing it. It adds up. Those beancounters would sell their mother for a $10,000 savings somewhere.

Oh no, this isn't going to turn into another one of those fog lights in no fog threads...hehehehehe

Lights are pretty standardized by the DOT. I'm not sure if I saw a car in front of me with white lights pointed on me....I'd think he's either backing up or coming right at me....could cause accidents.

Can those Euro front parking lights be retrofitted? Better yet...how about this retrofit package....

I didn't realize they had glass covers for the front head lights...http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showpart...=45459&prod=19991100&btnr=63_0550&hg=63&fg=05
As well as "Titanium covers" http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showpart...=45459&prod=19991100&btnr=63_0638&hg=63&fg=95

I wonder if we can order the glass ones?!? My plastic ones are pretty pitted after six years.

MINI owners revolted and had MINI USA install the rear fogs on their cars.

Even went it's raining at night on the highway, the regular tail lights cannot be seen through all the tire spray and rain. The Volvos, Mercedes, Audis, etc that have them do stand out. The only thing they could be mistaken for is a brake light that is stuck and won't go out. Hence some manufacturers only putting one rear fog light on a car.

Noodle, buddy, the titanium refers to the color of the housing, not the cover material. Titanium is a metal which is opaque you nut. And the "glass" referred to is also not the material either. They call them a "glass" because it would be silly to call them a "plastic", but they are made of plastic you noodle.
