Rear lights

Can someone help?

2000 323i. My dashboard is indicating that my tail lights are out. I checked all 3 lights in both the right and left tail lights and all of them work, including blinker, brake light, etc.

I do have aftermarket bulbs in the tail lights, Sylvania I beleive.

I had the car in for service a few months ago and they said that the dash board warning was being caused by these aftermarket bulbs, and you have to put in BMW bulbs? Does anyone beleive this?

Second question. Both og my license plate bulbs are out. Does anyone know if the warnings on the dashboard 'car' are hooked to the license plate lights?

Just don't want to go blow 20 bucks on all these lights before I see if any of you fine folks know something to help here.

The license plate lights are "hooked" to the warnings in the dash on my 525 - I can't say for sure if its the same on your car but it should be as well. As far as the aftermarket bulbs, all of my rear lights except for the reverse lights are aftermarket ones and I've never had an issue with them. I've heard that the aftermarket ones burn out quicker but I've never heard of them throwing warnings.
