There is an easier way. Heres the link http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/electrical/e36_reset_service_lights.html . I used that way to reset the inspection light and everything went perfectly. You don't have to buy all the stuff they mention, you can use a regular wire. BTW the key should be turned to the position where the engine is working, but don't start the car. So it's not the position that cranks over the engine but the position that is next to it, where the key is left when you drive around but the engine should be off. Hope this helped.

Either will work. I made my first one back in 1988 and used the #7 terminal and #19 (ground) terminal. I used momentary switch from radio Shack and an old 35mm film container as a housing. For wire I used a length of zip cord long enough so that I do do the resetting from the drivers seat and watch the lights. The Dec 1988 issue of the Roundel and the update in the Jan 92 Roundel have the articles and are reprinted in the BMW Enthusiast's Companion. No problems have ever been encountered.

Today I reset the service lights of my 87 325 i (later type socket) with a fused jumper wire as described for the first time and it worked perfectly.
