How many miles on the car? This sounds more like a possible transmission failure than the Sliptronic problem - your model year (2000) is well before the known Sliptronic issues on 2003 - 2004 models.

the car has 80,000 on it and when this problem accures i take the car for a ride in drive and let the computer and transmission shift threw all the gears. then the next time i stop the reverse is back what do ya think it could be?

I had a problem very similar to this description. My transmission functioned properly in every gear except for reverse. When I moved the shifter to 'R' the car acted as if I had selected 'N'. Had to push the car out of a parking space once and out of my garage once... At first it started like you described it where the reverse worked sometimes and sometimes it did not. Later, reverse would not engage at all. Ended up being a shot reverse gear, new (refurbished actually) transmission installed at the dealership; luckily my powertrain was still under warranty or that could have meant big bucks. Hope this helps.

The BMW dealer didn't install a new transmission while
under warranty?

No, virtually ALL manufacturers (and not just cars, either) perform warranty work with refurbished parts or new parts, depending on what they have available. They will always used refurbs if they have them available.

After all, from their viewpoint, the part they are removing is not new, so they have no obligation to replace it with a brand new, never used part.
