reverse problem

Hi all,
I just encounter with the transmission problem on the weekend.
I own a 2000 323i Steptronic has 98000km, got it brand new, and kept up with all maintenance.
Saturday morning, it drove fine, by the evening I put in reverse and it just roll backward but didn't want to move, I revved and the rpm move 2 to 3 thousand, is like it was in neutral. The 'D' gear and other gear are fine.
Has any one experience this before, what kind of repair do I need to do and how much you think it will cost to repair?

i'm not an expert on this,
but it maybe a transmission problem.
i've usually seen it with forward gears, but when the car free revs in gear, that's usually it...

i've had a transmission go out on me while trying to go faster than 80mph on my old 89 buick leSabre back in 97. the car may have hit around 100k miles at that point.. although 100k km sounds a bit early for a trans problem, but you never know..
