Roll over protection

I have a 2003 330Ci Convertible and the other day my child hit a curb and caused the roll over protection to pop up. Is this something I can fix myself or will it have to go to the dealer? If it has to go to the dealer, does anyone know how much that might cost?

Wow, I thought you had to have a wheel leave the ground to activate the ROP! Did he/she hit the curb pretty hard? Yes I believe you have to go to the dealer and have the ROP reset, and you may what to have them check the wheels for damage.

Somewhere (unofficial source) I had read that you can just push it back down, the dealer does not need to reset it. However, as Dan said, they recommend that you have the dealer inspect the car for damage. It must have taken a pretty hard shot somewhere to deploy it. And as Dan said, I also thought that there was some sort of angle sensor that detected an imminent rollover. I guess that a hard enough shot could fool it?

The rollover protection system will be automatically activated ia an accident or in a potentially dangerous driving situation (extreme angles in longitudinal-or transverse axis). After activing the system the bars can be retracted. Take out the screwdriver handle and special tool from the tool kit and put them together.
1. Pull out the head rest
2.Take off the cover from the rollover bar.
3. Insert special tool as far as possible into the guide of the locking catch mechanism.
4. Use moderate force to press the rollover bar down and release the pressure on the special tool.
5. Pull out the special tool and push down the rollover bar until it engages with an audible click.
6. Fit the cover bach onto the rollover bar and make sure it is tight.
7. insert the headrest.

Same procedure for the second rollover bar. Have the system tested by a BMW dealer as soon as possible. this INFO is in your owner's manual.

This is in the owner's manual. What ISN'T there is the answer to a question I've had for some time... will the roll-over protection deploy if the top is closed? If so, it seems it'll most certainly damage the convertible top. Was the top up or down on your car when this happened?

The roll bars WILL deploy if the top is up. The canvas roof and its spindly frame will not hold the car up if it lands upside down. I witnessed a rear end crash of an E36 convertible with it's top up. The roll bars were clearly seen pushing the canvas roof up. Appeared to be no rips, but had the E36 a glass backlight like the E46, it would no doubt have been shattered.

Hey Guys and Girls,

The top was up and the roof is fine. I took it to the dealer and within less than 10 min they had the car back out to me. Not sure exactly what they did but there was no charge [clap] .
