My 01 325i (stick shift, 46K) has this problem esp when cold and also when I'm in traffic. RPM is stable most of the time but when I'm in traffic or parking where I have to gas it a little to get it to inch forward often the rpm drops to low 300s then back up pass 1000 and then back to 300 and then up. It doesn't stabilize until I give it some gas. One time it even died. No check engine lights though! Any help appreciated.

Eddo. My mum's 325i had the same problem. In traffic you could part-throttle and it would give itself a bootfull of power or vice-versa. I'm convinced that your problem (as was ours) is that your car has a dodgy drive-by-wire sensor. We recently got ours changed (under warranty) and now the car is much smoother and a whole lot easier to drive.

I found that it was excessively difficult to drive my mum's car smoothly but now this has been cured. Perhaps you should suggest this to your dealership.

i have a similar problem w/ my car. usually during cold start up. rpm jumps around btw 7-800 to 1500. after bouncing aroudn for about 15- 20 secs or so, it settles down, once it gets warmed up somewhat.

i had the dme reprogrammed but the issue is still around. some times, the car would just stall in first, even with part throttle, and slow clutch engagement. guess i'll call bmw abotu this. it's nice to have a bmw na rep on board [thumb]
