when I bought my BMW from the dealership they advised me not to go for additional rustproofing,
A. because they are not sure how the paint will react to the oil rustproofing and
B. because the car is already rustproofed?

Just wondering how everybody else is protecting their car from the salty winters roads.

[thumb] Good question, I live, work and drive in the Washington D.C. area and here they use salt, sand and chemicals in the winters to melt snow and prevent ice from formimg on the roads. Yes, I know bimmers come out of the factory with rust protection however during the winters especially after snow days I get my car washed including the under body. I religiously get my car washed every two weeks during the winter to ensure all salt, chemicals and sand get removed from my bimmer. My bimmer is my daily driver, and has survived seven winters, heading for the eighth. Just my two and a half cents worth. Happy Motoring... [driving2]

The "rust proofing" option is really just a marketing scam,
like buying a $30 "service protection program" for a $100
phone.

Skip it, and all things like it, IMHO.

At our Toyota dealer rustproofing is expensive as heck and in reality it only costs us less than $20 bucks for a bottle of it and we don't use a whole bottle on a car.

Your BMW comes rustproofed like all other cars do and the additional rustproofing is unneeded. If maybe later in time you wish to apply and can get it done cheap then go for it.

Anything more than $40 bucks for rustproofing is a rip off.
