Having some rust issues with the dinan exhaust. It is only on the letters on the end of the tips. Need some advice on how to remove the rust safely without putting scratches on the stainless. Can you beleive that? 700$ later and now only 2 months after installing, i get rust. Sounds pisser though.

The only way to remove the rust is to grind it away - which in that case it will scratch it. Sorry. I'd give them a call, since they have a warranty on their products.

i thought it was stainless steel. are you sure it's not just tarnished from the heat and discoloring to a brown color or is it actually rust? cause if it is rust, something is wrong and i'd call them up and get a new one.

Under some circumstances stainless will rust red (iron oxide), especially when exposed to certain chemicals. Chlorine is REALLY bad for stainless. It can rust due to bad cleaning practices (DON'T use a chlorinated cleaner! How many people use Comet on their stainless in the kitchen??) or poor quality stainless. First, I would call Dinan and ask them what they think.

Stainless actually has a natural coat of "rust" - chrome oxide. You can restore this using a process called "passivation", using nitric and hydrochloric acids. We do this in my line of work - this is a standard practice for new equipment and sanitary tubing in the food industry.

Again, call Dinan and see what they say. For more general info, check this link.

Where did you get it for $700? I thought it was closer to $900.

Thanks

ebay from a bmw dealership in the midwest, some guy was trying to sell it to himself to get it at a lower price and i swooped in and bought it. It was a werid situation where he was the seller and he was bidding. It backfired in his face when i wont the item.

I emailed this thread to my dad... he works for Carpenter Technology (in Reading, PA) and has his masters degree in metalurgy... so hopefully he can help (though kirby's post was informative.)

Have you tried polishing up the stainless steel? Some of these auto chrome polishes, such as Eagle One Nevr-Dull REALLY clean things up (it is able to remove rust and tar and will clean up steel).
