Today when I started my car (2004 325CI).... my "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light came on and it stayed on the entire while I was driving. The car was shaking alittle also. Neither of these problems has happen before.

BMW service is closed today.. but I am taking my car in for them to look at it tomorrow. During the meantime, does anyone know why the light came on and if this is serious?

To be ohnest I don't know how vast of an emissions control system is on a BMW, but if its any larger of a scope of a SHO them I wouldn't be worried. It might be a cheap sensor that needs changing. Without stating the mileage on your car it is really quite hard to tell.

You can buy a code reader that you can see the code the computer gives out and check whats wrong. Sure beats having it taken to the dealer every time it happens.

I bet its nothing serious, and if its an 04 I bet its covered under warranty.

It could be a lot of reasons, it's happened to be before as well. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't diagnose the problem. Turns out that my car didn't work too well on 93 Octane. I now use 91 and it's been fine.

That sounds like a misfire problem we have seen before. It will run rough and the light will come on.

If you take the car from a warm garage to the cold outside it could just need a shot of dry gas to control condensation.

This seems to be happening a lot with the '04's. What's up?

Mine did it a few times the first week, then did it again this week.
