Ciao all,

Just purchased a 2002 330i. This is my second BMW and I love the car. I know BMWs are not perfect when it comes to quality issues but you just can't beat the way they drive. No other car feels as balanced and fun to drive. I look forward to my commutes to and from work.

With that said I need some help in getting some issues resolved. I hope to return the favor in the future. Does anyone know how to rest the service indicator interval without the service tool? Also, when I purchased the car I got 5 keys with it but only one works. I was told the keys charge through the ignition. I used one of the non functional keys on a 5 hour drive and it still didn't work. Anyone know if there is a way to change the battery inside the key?

Thanks I hope this forum works as well as the other forums I have been a part of.

Ciao

Tom

Welcome aboard,

Ignition key must be off
Press and hold the trip odometer reset button in the instrument cluster and turn the ignition key to the first position.
Keep the button pressed for approx 5 seconds until one of the following words appear in the display : “Oil Service” or “Inspection”, with “Reset”

The Service due is shown with “Reset” if the coded minimum consumption limit has been reached and resetting is possible, If reset is not shown, the minimum limit has not been reached and resetting is not possible

Press and hold the reset button again until the word “Reset” begin to flash.
While the display is flashing, press the left button briefly to reset the service interval. After the display has shown the new interval the following will appear : “End SIA”

The system can only be reset again after 2.5 Gal. (10 liters) of fuel have been consumed.

In regard to your key issue, sounds like it needs to be programmed.

1. get into the car and shut the door
2. put the good key into the ignition, turn the car to run and then turn off again (total time on should be less than 5 seconds).
3. Remove the key
4. Hold down the lock button (BMW logo) and press the unlock (arrow) button three times. The key is now programmed.
5. repeat step 4 for all additional keys.

Ciao Tom,

Thanks for the info. I haven't tried the resetting the service interval indicator yet, maybe I will try that this afternoon. But just wanted to let you know that in step 4 of reprograming the key that you need to hold down the open button and press the close button three times.

Thanks again.

About the charging the key bit. I too have encountered this problem. According to the service manager at my dealership, there is no way to change the battery inside these keys. Two of my three master keys (I had a spare master key made recently and it is the only one with a still functional battery) have dead batteries and do not charge when inserted in the ignition. Pretty crappy but the key itself still works.

Well, I guess at least one of my keys is bad. I was able to charge and reprogram another dead key. So now I have two functioning keys and three non-functioning keys. I will try the other one shortly. Have you tried to reprogram them?

Tom, thanks for all the help. I was able to reset the oil service indicator per your instructions.

Thanks
