I decided to post this for those of us with an auto, [V] that would like to remove their shifter for whatever reason. For me, it was as simple as grabbing it and pulling straight up like your life depends on it. Watch out though, because the knob likes to try and hit you in the face. [B)] Does anyone have directions that conflict with mine?

The following are the instructions that I have always followed;
1. Obtain a Snell 95, (or better), helmet and put it on.
2. Depending on whether you are right- or left-handed, get into the front seat of the appropriate side.
3. Grasp the gear shift knob with gorilla like force.
4. Pull straight up with all of your might.
5. Thank God for the Snell helmet that just kept the gear shift knob from becoming permanently embedded in your forehead!

Wow, that's fairly easy to remove !! When I had my Jetta, I changed the shift knob and it was quite a pain in the ass. I had to lift the leather boot up to reveal the metal shaft or whatever. Around the metal was a small metallic ring kinda thing...you have to cut that off (I used a dremel), and then you slide the shift knob off. I don't know who actually cares about the workings of the Jetta shift knob, I just though I should share some info. [hihi]

I was cut off someone on Route 22 just a week or so ago, and I revved my first gear to the red, then shifted hard into second, and all of a sudden my knob flew off!!! I was freaking out for a second, because I was on one of the most dangerous highways in jersey and thought my shifter was broken.

I can relate to that. See, I didn't use the helmet....[?|] 3 days walking around with a bruise on my forehead.[rofl]

But then the shiftknob came off twice on me at the track on the 1-2 shift, fairly easily. Suudenly I was holding the knob and trying to shove it back on while accelerating. LOL, but something i would not want to happen to me while driving. I couldn't replicate it later on at all, but was just funny.
