Shock Life

[thumb] Mine lasted about 165,000 miles and I had no real reason to change them except I really, really wanted to lower my car and get an up-graded suspension system. The average shock life is approximately 100,000 miles. 39,000 is still under warantee and should be covered by the Stealership for free. [driving2]

I just replaced my rear shocks at around 90K miles. The passenger rear one was leaking oil.

I am debating on switching my front shocks but I'm guessing I should wait until there is a problem.

What years are your cars?

oh and I paid around 430 to have both shocks replaced on the rear with aftermarket parts.

Was this a good deal?

They will last anywhere from 40K to 125K or more, but the dampening ability will usually be degraded slowly as they age. The 125K shocks, while "OK", would be noticeably different if you compared them to new shocks. At 110K miles, after removing the rears, I could compress them by hand, and feel a difference in resistance between the left and right.

Driving style and conditions (potholes, rough roads) will wear out a shock faster, so life does vary.

Thanks for the info Kirby.

I replaced the rear shocks at around 91K

It cost me 425 with after market parts.... do you think that was a fair deal?

Should I replace the front ones just to be consistent?

I only replaced the rear ones cause the right shock was leaking oil.

Depends on the brand that they used. Bilsteins are probably the best non-adjustable shock, and they retail for around $150 a pair for the rear. That leaves $275 for misc parts and labor. All labor - that's a bit high. If they replaced the shock mounts also, it's OK.

Yeah I am not getting a good vibe from this guy.

I just paid like 750 to have a steering wheel pump replaced. How can I find a fair BMW mechanic?

I guess I will look to replace the front shocks sometime after 100K

Does it matter that my rears were replaced earlier?
