Sirius Radio Installation

I have a 2004 325XI that I recently had Sirius radio installed (by the BMW dealer). I also have that shark fin on the top of my car above the rear window.

I thought that shark fin was intended to house the Sirius antenna, but to my disgust the dealership glued this ugly antenna to my trunk lid and it looks like crap. Has anyone had the Sirius installed without having to glue an ugly antenna on the car, or does anyone know for sure that the antenna should have been put in that shark fin? I have asked the dealership and all they tell me is that is the way BMW recommends to have it installed, but they can't even tell me for sure what that shark fin is for.

Help!

Hi ..... I just visited my local dealer yesterday to discuss options for ordering a spank'n new 2005 325ci, and while in discussion, I learned from the salesman that if Sirius is ordered in this manner, direct from factory, then the Sirius antennae is integrated into a shark fin. Since I was not interested in the BWW Assist, I asked if the shark fin is installed for the SIrus option only, and the salesman said yes. If no Sirius option is chosen at factory order, then it is my understanding that the dealer installed version is intergrated into the sound sytem like the ipod, but the antennae is outboard of the shark fin. Possibly someone out there can confirm this for me as we all know, salesmen can sometime be mis-informed !! ?? !! Thanks and I can't wait to place my order, I am thinking "Siriusly" of Silver Grey Met w/Natural Brown Leather interior... Anyone out there in E46 land have this particular color combo ??? I have the Silver Grey Met w/Natural Brown on an '03 325i which according to the brocher for that year was not a combo that was offered. I think since my car was made late in '03 is why they put that color combo in. But I like it the natural brown with the two tone black and brown in the door is sharp. The only other interior color that is nicer to me is the cinnamon, which is not offered on the 325.
Good luck hope you get what your looking for.

I've heard of guys putting it on the ledge right behind the passanger seats, below the rear window. The guy who did it had no problems with reception or anything. If you have metallic tint though, you might have some issues.

As I approached my new cabrio, I thought what's that thing on the trunk. As I got closer, it said Sirius. I was surprised, too. I was told that it's the only place they can put it on a cabrio. I would have thought they could put it on the rear package shelf or on the rear window in a sedan or coupe--perhaps you could ask about that.

Anyway, I love the Sirius radio and don't really think abuout the antenna--got over it pretty quickly. Also, I've never been asked by anyone about it; I guess they can read.

Sirius Interior Antenna - Just announced

Hey guys,

Sirius just announced the first satellite radio antenna that is mounted inside the car. It is called the SIGMA (SIRIUS Interior Glass Mounted Antenna). I would guess everyone should be able to use this in the near future. No more ugly exterior antennas!

This is a link to a forum on the SIGMA antenna:

http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14422

From thier pressrelease:

SIRIUS Introduces Interior Glass Mounted Satellite Radio Antenna for Vehicles

Design Offers Aesthetic Advantage Over Exterior Mounted Satellite Radio Antennas

NEW YORK, Oct 26, 2004 -- SIRIUS, the premium satellite radio provider known for delivering the very best in commercial-free music and sports programming to cars and homes across the country, today announced the introduction of the world's first interior glass mounted satellite radio antenna.

The SIRIUS Interior Glass Mounted Antenna, or SIGMA, was developed by SIRIUS and its antenna partner RecepTec, to provide a distinct aesthetic advantage over exterior mounted satellite radio antennas currently in use. SIGMA is mounted in the shaded sun band of a vehicle's front windshield, has no exposed wiring and is unobtrusive. In addition to its aesthetic advantage, SIGMA will:

* Reduce costs due to the elimination of antenna pre-wiring and
associated factory installation costs

* Allow faster and more efficient factory and dealer installations

* Reduce warranty costs -- windshield protection eliminates problems
common to exterior mounted antennas such as water leakage, wind noise
or detachment due to harsh long term environmental conditions and car
wash damage

The SIGMA uses current OEM validated technology that has already been approved by SIRIUS' car manufacturing partners. SIGMA is made possible by the unique highly inclined elliptical orbits of SIRIUS' three satellites, resulting in superior line of sight reception to vehicles.

"This is the next step in the evolution of satellite radio antennas," said Doug Wilsterman, Senior Vice President of Automotive OEM for SIRIUS. "We believe that the unique design and ease of installation will make the SIGMA very popular with consumers."

SIGMA offers auto manufacturers the flexibility to completely integrate satellite radio inside a vehicle's passenger cabin without disrupting the harmony of a vehicle's interior or exterior styling.

Snowcrash is right. It does work well on the rear deck behind the seats. I use that for my XM antenna. The problem is the metallic tint issue. I have held off on my tint waiting to pay more for a "ceramic based" tint to avoid interception problems.

Thats kinda of a drag --

Go to a prior post of mine in June called Sirius on a CIC??
Here's a link if it works

http://www.bmwboard.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10114

With a front windshield antenna how does the signal get to the radio? Is it wired somehow? It seems that hard wired would give better preservation of the signal quality, which is digital.

If the link doesn't work use the search function at the top and type in sirius on a cic and choose the June 2004 thread and scrolldown to my post with 2 picture links.
