I have been hearing this fan belt/squealing type noise that sounds like it is coming from under the car. I only hear the noise when I am accelerating or when I am coasting but once I hit the breaks it seems to go away. Does anyone have any ideas od what this might be?

Thanks!

have your brakes looked at, possible that your pads are starting to wear down to to the sensor. If it is still at the beginnning stages it could act as you described. Once they get more worn they will squeal more during breaking also, then at some point they will start to grind if you don't do anything about it. It may be so premature that it has not yet trigured the light sensor, and goes away under brake pressure.

That is where I would start if it was my ride.
If the noise goes away under braking I would say it is probubly brake related.
Good luck.

What year is your car? Have you considered having the water pump looked at. I know it sounds crazy, but I had that almost identical problem on my 2001, thought for sure it was the brakes. Took it to the dealer, dropped it off, and they had to replace my water pump. I am so by no means a mechanic...but it might be worth a shot. Good Luck!

anything is possible in these cars, to me the water pump could be the culprit but is would not go away during breaking, if anythign the sound would change slightly during exceleration and engine RPM. Also if it is the waterpump it should make the same noise at idle while in park or stopped, where if break realted should make no noise at all of not moving.

I'm curious to what the noise it, let us know your findings.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I don't think that it is the water pump because I had an old car that had a water pump go and I can still hear that noise in my head!!!! Thanks for all of the suggestions though!
