Squeeky Noise

I recently bought a 2nd Hand 1998 Automatic E36 BMW 316i from Singapore. After a few kilometers, I started hearing a squeeky sound from the hood. Various mechanics have told me to change the Pulleys, others the Fanbelts, others Timing-Belt tensioner, etc. The sound is heard when the car is idling and goes out when accelarating. I poured water over the pulleys and belts area and the sound goes out, but returns after a few hours. Any ideas anyone? [???1] [???1]

Sounds like a belt (fan belt) is starting to slip. These are very inexpensive to replace so if the belt is showing signs of wear/cracking just get it changed and that should solve your problem and its the most common item that squeaks like you describe.

Thanx DSK, that has been my thinking tho' my mechs seem to have all sorts of other diagnosis cos the fan belt does not look worn out. I am changing the fan belt, asap. [clap] [clap]

Aesthetics45, there is no burnt smell, just an irritating sound. [}:)]
