Hey this is my first time posting, and this looks like a pretty sweet forum, people always seemed to be helped so i figured i would Join. I got a 1991 318i which squeaks in the monring when i start it, I think its the belt, but I read some forums that said my car had a chain and not a belt....? Can anyone ellaborate on this? It squeaks when it is moist outside, dont know if that helps, but yea. So if anyone could help me with this problem it would be great. Also adjusting valves...my friend said it sounded like i should adjust my vavles, is this something I should do my self, or take it in to a shop?

Thanks
Chris

your squeak is probably your accesory belt. You should have a timing chain but also a belt that turns things like your water pump, power steering pump, and alternator etc. You may even have two accesory belts. I don't have a 318 to confirm that though. You at least have one. Check it/them to see if it is loose or just plain worn out. Or it could be overtightened. They are relatively inexpencive to replace and if one breaks its not a big deal because it is not a timing belt.

As for adjusting the valves.... it seems like something you can do yourself if you have a book to guide you. I am going to attempt that sometime in the next few months, i'll let you know how it turns out. Its not a critical thing. Its just noisy.

I would look at the water pump belt. This runs around the alternator to the fan. It is probably just loose. My car had some serious issues with eating through belts before I changed out the pump pulley. The belt will run you about $10.00 for a new one. Adjusting the valves is easy on the car. Definately get the Bentley manual for the E36 before you do it to get the spacing. You are also going to have to buy a new valve cover gasket when you do that.

When my M10 engine belt (both belts just behing the radiator fan) squeal in cold/wet weather I just use an anti-moisture lubricating spray on them and all noise stops...
.So,stop worrying and enjoy the car !

PS.M10 engines (8valves) have a timing chain, later engines a tim.belt...I think all cars after 1987 have belts and not chains...
